A big part of the low rating has to do with paying for 2 hour instruction and our instructor, Kyle, cutting out after a hour and 20 minutes. As a massage therapist if someone pays me for a 2 hour massage ya don't stop 40 min early. There was a family with a young daughter so he focused on her which was understandable but when they wanted to leave early, that would have been a great opportunity to give us some instruction. The direction given was pretty minimal. The gear was falling apart. When we got back to the shop there was a different older gentlemen at the counter who didn't say two words to us, let alone ask us anything about the experience and our instructor was gone for the day. My family who lives on island usually goes to Wave Rider and loves it but I always like to try out other smaller operations. Working in the service industry in a resort town, its almost next to impossible not to get a generous cash tip from me but i just couldn't in this case. Will definitely go out again but not with these brahs
Great experience with surf lessons. Our instructor was awesome! Prices were good and they supplied all the equipment you need (board, rashguard, shoes) for no added cost. The photographer is a bit pricy but they get some great shots if you want a suvenior after. Very happy with the experience.
If i could give them zero stars i would. This company is more interested in taking your money than providing you with the correct equipment. I will tell everyone who visits Maui to avoid this business. A man who is 6'6" and 265lbs has no business being rented a 10' SUP board. The lady that we rented from insisted a 10' SUP is boyant n stable enough. Well it certainly was not! My wife who is also a beginner surfer was given inappropriate equipment. When the instructors in the surf question why you were rented such gear, the writings on the wall. Instead of taking my money they should hv told us to go across the street for appropriate gear. No Aloha spirit at the surf shack!
Hes very patient,kind and walks you through all the steps. Hes very knowledgeable of a good wave and teaches you how to detect a good wave and a not so good wave. He educates you of safety and how to handle your board. I did the 2 hour private lesson and i would highly recommend Lucas he does a one on one private lesson with you. I was up on my board handeling the waves right away. We even went to 4 foot waves when i was ready. This will be a experience you cherish for all the years to come. ALSO ask them about the private photographer in the water that gets amazing photo shots of you while out there. Their price is very affordable we got like 80 photos for $60.00 and high quality for large blow up pics! You wont be disappointed at the SURF SHACK and make sure you ask for LUCAS -DEZI PEZI
Omg this was a incredible exsperince for me! I will remember this for the rest of my life. This was my 1st ever experience of surfing. My teacher was Lucas he was a wonderful man and teacher
Can't say enough positive things about our lesson with Kyle and the Surf Shack! I was definitely a little nervous in the beginning but Kyle was calm and gave clear directions that quickly eased my nerves! We both got up and Kyle even had us tandem surfing by the end of the lesson! Thank you Kyle!
