There were plenty of fish in the inner bay, but the visibility was not so good. Also the sheltered area is very limited.
Came here to snorkel. Park up the hill and walk to the snorkel entry way following road back down. Second new entry right off the parking lot but current is stronger and deeper if u enter there...but more fish. Waves can be strong. Watch for sharp rocks/corral/ sea urchins everywhere. Corral here is mostly gone. No turtles here when we went...tho they seemed to be almost everywhere else.
Beautiful place to Snorkel, lots of fish and even some live coral unlike most other places
There is only a tiny portion on the left side of the cove where you can enter the water and eventually place 1-2 beach chairs. More than that, the only parking area is located 400 meters south of the cove on the lava field.
On my snorkeling marking scale in that afternoon the score for Ahihi Cove were 4 from a maximum of 5 point. In better snorkeling conditions I thing that the score can be a 4.5.
The clarity of the water and the snorkel itself depends very much if there are waves or not. In the first part of August the water on the south-western beaches of Maui had the worst visibility conditions from the entire western coast.
Water is so crystal clear that without snorkel gear you can see fishes.
You can park here and walk back up the main road going north and enjoy some amazing snorkeling. It’s a little over a quarter mile walk!
If you’re only going to the cove just beyond the parking lot, be careful while snorkeling and hiking over the lava rocks, lots of sharp rocks/coral. There is no beach to speak of but ample parking and porta potties.
