In that day there were disturbing waves so we tried to snorkel only on the left side of the reef were the water was deep enough. We had two rounds of snorkeling (about 2.5 hours in total) but we struggled al the time against the lateral pushing current and it is not quite a peaceful snorkel time.
Some of the best snorkeling we've ever encountered! Huge variety of fish and multiple sea turtles.
On my snorkeling marking scale in that day the score for Ulua Beach were 4 from a maximum of 5 point. In good weather conditions it cut be a 4.5 snorkeling area.
Great snorkeling early morning, good surf for body boarding in the afternoon. Beautiful little; A small gem.
Ulua beach is located in Wailea. It is one of the few beaches from the Maui’s west coast were you have a chance to find a parking place in the free parking area near the right side of the beach. I think that this beach is usually used by the tourists that live in the big condos complex nearby having their cars parked in front of the condos.
The beach is long (300 meters) and large enough so it is not crowded.
Early morning snorkeling is awesome. Seeing fish under the glass ocean is beautiful. Here is a photo of sunset
The right side is very good for snorkeling but when there are no waves. There is an extended reef about 100 m off the shore, but the water over the reef is shallow and snorkeling could be dangerous even were the waves do not appear to be too big. Also there is a traverse current pushing you to the right towards the emerged rocks that are limiting the right side of Ulua beach.
Saw a giant turtle during snorkeling around 9am Oct 31. Amazing!
Also the water was not very clear. Not so many fish but an interesting underwater landscape.
